At the beginning of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, members were commanded to build a temple unto the Lord. At the time, this felt almost impossible. In the 1800s, many imagined something simple, even a structure built from logs. But the Lord had something greater in mind.
The Saints in Kirtland, Ohio gave everything they had to build His house. They sacrificed money, time, labor, and precious belongings. Some women even broke their fine china so it could be mixed into the stucco exterior of the temple.
They gave everything they could to follow God.
During the dedication of the Kirtland Temple, every pew inside was filled while crowds gathered outside hoping to feel part of the experience. As the congregation sang “The Spirit of God,” many testified that angels joined them in song.
That sacred moment — where heaven and earth felt incredibly close — is what inspired this painting.
Although this piece is historical, it is also deeply personal. To me, it is a reminder that God sees every sacrifice we make for Him. None of it goes unnoticed.
